Why The Covid-19 Vaccines Must Be Kept in ultracold storage?

Pfizer and Moderna are each recently introduced as the first Covid-19 vaccines on the market. And, both are 90% effective. Actually, it is an unprecedented achievement, but it isn’t all roses! In fact, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are looking to be a logistical challenge. Why?

Because they work in an entirely different way than conventional vaccines. To illustrate, conventional vaccines usually contain inactivated disease proteins that were made by the pathogen; essentially mimicking the infectious agent.

Therefore, once injected, the body’s immune system will learn how to protect against these agents. Then, when you are actually exposed to the disease, your immune system already knows to fight it off.

Covid-19 Vaccine: How Does It Work?

The coronavirus vaccines are different. It’s called an RNA vaccine. It contains an mRNA sequence that is coded for a disease-specific antigen.

In fact, mRNA is the molecule that tells cells what to build. And, in this case it tells them to builds a cell that mimics Covid-19 on the cell’s surface. But, it is not actually Covid! Then, the immune system recognizes that it is a threat and learns to protect against it.

Of course, there are some benefits to an RNA vaccine. Since the RNA vaccine doesn’t have any infectious elements, it is safer. For instance, there is no risk of accidentally getting sick. Moreover, the RNA vaccine is really effective!

During their phase three clinical trials, Pfizer and BioNTech said that it had been 90% effective. And, during the phase three trial of Moderna, they have had a 94.5 success rate.

Pfizer vaccine uses new technology that requires different modes of storage and administration. Firstly, the Pfizer vaccine needs to be administrated twice, 21 days apart. And. it needs to be cold! Really really cold! Negative 94 degrees Fahrenheit cold!

Normally, vaccines only need to be stored at 40 degrees. A Pfizer representative said that as soon as the coronavirus vaccine begins to warm up; the mRNA component begins to fall apart and twist around in ways so that it doesn’t become effective.

Pfizer vs. Moderna

Pfizer can be kept in an ultra low temperature freezer for up to six months. Or, it can be kept for five days at the normal 35-46 degrees. Pfizer company will be sending the vaccine in storage units full of dry ice that can be refilled to last up to 15 days; as long as the ultracold storage unit is only opened twice a day.

While Moderna vaccine’s true dose doesn’t have to be quite cold; it does have to be colder than the standard hospital refrigerator: at negative 4 degrees Fahrenheit.

So, one thing that is notable is that at 25 °F, the Moderna vaccine can actually last up to one month. But, at that same temperature, which is of course below freezing, the Pfizer-BionTech vaccine lasts only about days!

However, if you cool the Pfizer-BionTech vaccine down to negative 94°F; it can actually be stored for up to six months. Of course, it is difficult to get ultracold freezers.

Also, whereas the Pfizer-BionTech needs be injected on day 1 and the another injection on day 22; the Moderna vaccine injection is on day 1 and it’s a little bit later on day 29. So, it’s and additional week.

Furthermore, Pfizer-BionTech reported a 90% effective rate, and recently we also got data, being reported by Moderna. Actually, they are claiming a 94.5% effective rate.
