Rain Gauge – High Precision Type 7052

Rain-gauge-high-precision-type-7052

Rain gauge, high precision

The up to the minute precipitation pulse transmitter type 7052 is used for measuring the amount and the intensity of rain. The in instrument does this process via the tipping bucket rain gauge system. The nominal content of the tipping bucket is 2 cubic meters and it agrees with a resolution of 0.1 millimetres precipitation.

It features a superb linearity up to an intensity rate of 4 mm/min. If you need to measure solid precipitation in form of snow or hail, you may use the alternate model which has a built-in heating system.

This alternate model measures the solid precipitation within a temperature range down to -25 °C. The opening of the unit is 200 square centimetres which totally agrees with the German Meteorological Service standards.

The heated version includes two heating systems, one at the collection funnel and the other at the tipping bucket area. The array funnel consists similarly of stainless steel. The rainwater is transferred to the tipping bucket through an adjustable nozzle, in which a filter keeps out crude impurities. The tipping bucket is a two-state system that is balanced in a way that has flowed after 2 cubic meters of precipitation.

One of the most fantastic advantages of the tipping bucket rain gauge is that it records the data to a computer so you don’t have to recall emptying, inspecting and resetting it.

There are different variations of this product which you may find in the following list:

  • 7052.0000 : Precipitation with reed contact
  • 7052.0100 : Precipitation with reed contact, incl. data logger
  • 7052.1000 : Precipitation with built-in heating
  • 7052.1100 : Precipitation with reed contact and built-in heating, incl. data logger
  • 7053.0000 : Bird deflector
  • 9011.0000 : Pole, self-supporting; for measuring height 1.0 m

By collecting a small volume of water in one of two small buckets, the tipping bucket gauges work. Upon capture of the storm, the bucket tips and empties. The occurrence of this “tip” is registered, and the amounts and levels of precipitation are transmitted as the number of tips and the rate they occurred at.

During cycles of heavy rainfall and in case of frozen precipitation, tipping bucket rain gauges appear to underestimate precipitation. In high wind both gauges seem to underestimate. Yet tipping bucket gauges are less costly compared to weighing gauges, and need considerably less maintenance.

To put it another way, tipping bucket rain gauges have two flaws. One is that they do not work well or not at all with frozen precipitation. The other is that they under-catch during exceptionally heavy rainfall, for example when more than 1.5 inches of rain fall in an hour, because the tipping arm cannot keep up with the rain flow through the seal.

This can result in precipitation measured over a longer time period than the actual rain event. If weather data is compared with manual rain gauges over longer periods of time, the under-catch can disappear, compare 1-minute interval data to 15-minute interval, or hourly data to daily data.

Furthermore, the position where the rain gauge is mounted may have an effect on accuracy. As a general rule, the windier the position of the instrument is, the greater the error in calculating precipitation would be.
